-Back to the state of 1.0 oz shots, 3.2 beer, and a lil place called Trails; UT take 2

Basically the same shenanigans as round one, but this time Max Mancini made the drive out to the Mormon state in the Tahoe. We arrived at our Bed and Breakfast, compliments of Max’s friend Sarah who happens to also be a Rossi Tele athlete. Cursing along the 80 up to Park City, we proceed to break the truck further, but nothing to stop the trip from going down; just yet. Milky white skies led us straight to the Skullcandy offices for some meet and greets of new staff, and new product samples. Consequently, the rest of the day was plagued with helmet wearing and talking across the room on wireless radios; but a really cool device breakthrough for Skullcandy (http://www.skullcandy.com).

Nearing the dinner hour, it looked like the storm would break. Meeting up with old friends Cox and Katie; as well as athletes Max Kuszaj Heath Ordway, and Jesse Hall, it appeared the trip would be all time. We got an early start the next day, setting out to one of our favorite resorts, Brighton. Conditions were great, but battles with the light were making our efforts ever more complicated.

Later in the week, the sun finally broke out, and we were at the top of Wolverine as soon as the boot pack was in. Some amazing shots came out of this session, and Heath threw down his most fluid line of the season off of the eastern wall.

Part 2: “The luck has run out” The UT curse on the truck furthers with the severing of the break line. After limping the truck 4 miles through stop light city in downtown SLC; via a series of combinations consisting of downshifting and e-braking; we get the truck into the off-road shop. The next several days were to be spent in the SLC area, and our luck came back when the US Freeskiing Nationals arrived in Snowbird. This gave us a chance to kick it with several friends and other athletes who were off shoots for the World Tour like John Nicholetta, Kiffor Berg, and Aaron Estrada. And final props to Crossman for taking the title at the bird! Special thanks to MSI for the Snowbird hook up! –Back to CO for a night, then to I’m off to the Alps to meet with the Liberty Skis team and Tyson Bolduc; where Max is off to AK for some much needed heli time all captured on HD.

“Taking a leap of faith can be portrayed in many ways. Today it was a leap of confidence and trust off a 100 ft cliff in the Colorado backcountry. I had been looking at the area for a few months, and yesterday set up the situation perfectly. I tried to jump another part of the cliff yesterday, but overshot my target by 20 to 30 feet and ended up taking the jump to about 80 to 90 feet down. Therefore, I felt confident in the conditions as well as my personal conditioning to be capable to take the impact of such a drop. However, the mountains in Colorado are much like Utah and do not yield very steep landings below such large cliffs like this so there was no possible way to as we say in the industry “stick” it, but with a controlled drop to the side of my body to disperse the impact I popped right out and skied down to my friends awaiting nervously below. To many this sounds crazy, but calculated risk is a better description. You will have to check out Two Plank Productions video this fall for coverage of the days antics, but take a look at the picture and you can see where I landed…. Good times!”

Coming to you from straight from Salt Lake, we are wrapping up 3 weeks straight of traveling and skiing epic powder. After returning victoriously from the X Games and SIA in Vegas, we split crews one to the US Open, the other back home to CB for 3 in a row storm cycles of 4+ feet each. Getting back to the office was really interesting, especially to find that the drive way and sleds were buried under 5 of snow behind a 8 foot plow bank. Great success the next day shredding the pow was only inevitable. After making several attempts to find good light, the storms simply wouldn’t let us go. The tree skiing was all time, with over 5 hours of pow footage in just a few days.

On the other front, the US Open went very successful as many of our friends and athletes who built outstanding results for them selves. Congrats to Colby for the big air win. Moving from the US Open, we now are temporally residing in the Salt Lake Area for the next week as we continue to shoot deep deep powder, and big lines. Today, taking a weather break to day for some much needed computer time, and mapping out tomorrow in Big Cottonwood canyon; some sick line/cliff options to parallel Freeskier Magazine’s “08 Buyers Guide Ski Test”. Props to the Discrete Headwear crew for touring us around, and Ryan Moore for the basement without heat to crash in.

Special thanks for Danni at Brighton, Jay and Nick at Solitude, and Connie at Alta for the accommodations!

Later this week, we’re expecting to cross state lines again headed for CO, and watching tons of DVDs in the truck on the way. Thanks for all of your support and contributions.

Icer Air

November has arrived, ski areas have begun opening, and it’s that time of year when the only thing on a skier’s mind is skiing. While most major ski events take place mid-winter in January and February, a relatively new competition has taken over the early season scene. In early November, people from all aspects of the ski industry converge on San Francisco to attend Icer Air, which is now in it’s third year. On the Thursday before the event, I flew out of DIA and into Reno, NV where I met up with my good friends Didrik and Spencer from school. On Friday, with anticipation high, we drove to San Francisco where we crashed early for the night in preparation for the next night to come. We woke up early, ate breakfast, and toured the city before heading over to the Giants’ Stadium. A baseball field wouldn’t generally be an ideal location for a big air ski event, but thanks to scaffolding stacked over 100ft high and over 200 tons of snow, a text-book jump was created. Corey had flown in Friday night to San Francisco from Denver, while Dan and Jersey drove up from Los Angeles. Upon seeing the riders hit the jump, it was apparent that the artificial set-up was not hindering the athlete’s ability to throw their best tricks. Big props to the builders of the jump, and Jon Olsson for his input. The competition heated up fast, but a few managed to stand out above the rest. Sammy Carlson was throwing consistent poked out 10s, which got him 3rd place. Simon Dumont, a favorite to win as he scored an extremely high 93 on one of his jumps, was throwing 10s and double fronts for second place. Simon also notably through a styled out 1260, but wasn’t able to get it all the way around. It was Jon Olsson who put on the best show of the night, which gave him the edge to win. He threw three Kangaroo flips in a row, one being good enough to score a 95, just edging out the Dumont. After awards, Talib Kweli and Mos Def performed one hell of a concert. About 20-30 thousand people were there to see it. I was lucky enough to be on the edge of the stage for a couple of songs, before they kicked me out. Didrik managed to get some good photo’s while I was shooting video. After leaving the event pumped from the concert, we headed to the Phoenix hotel where all the athletes were staying. Athletes and crew had a large dinner together before the real festivities began. We all headed off in Limo’s to the Temple night club where the Pink Carpet wrap party was taking place. The club packed tight, which made carrying around a camera a challenge, but still managed to get some good footage for the night. After some funny events we headed back to the phoenix, which included randomly picking up stragglers from our crew off the side of the road miles away from the club. It was one great day to say the least, I personally can’t wait until next year. Icer Air is a great way to kick off the season, and this event should only get bigger and bigger.
Check back throughout the winter as we cover the season.
