Chile Pt. 2: Trip Update

Update - Neither Ed and I made it to the next day. I tried to go fast
and take chances like a lot of people were telling me and I picked a
great line; it just wasn’t a great line for the conditions. I almost
crashed slamming on the brakes after an air and then I washed out
slamming on the brakes again after the next one. According Jim Jack,
the head judge, I “scared the judges” which isn’t really a good thing.
Edward also had to slam on the brakes coming to a complete stop and
the judges docked him for control real hard. He skied a great line
and got screwed over in more than just our opinions hahah. Another
skier actually lost a ski at the beginning of his line and made the
cut, which is pretty absurd. So we were definitely disappointed, but
got over it pretty quick.

The weather is blowing out there right now so the competition is still
in a weather hold. Chopo Diaz is in the lead with a 40.88, Julian
Lopez is in second with a 40.69 and a Swiss guy named Romain Bellon is
in 3rd with a 40.5. Ben Wheeler had an impressive run and is in the
4th with 40.19. For the women Jacqui Edgerley is leading followed by
Jess McMillan and Chopo’s 16 year old sister Soledad, or Sol with
35.94, 35.38, and a 35.25, respectively. And our friend Caleb Mullen
unfortunately fell victim to the speed of the venue as well and had a
scary tumble over some rocks which he didn’t have enough speed to
clear after scrubbing it all away.

Thanks for reading! Check back for photos, the internets suck so bad
down here we are going to have to wait for better connections to get
more up. Hopefully all the snow will mean great skiing tomorrow,
we’ll get to test out Fortitude’s new reverse camber ski. There
aren’t any trees up here though, so a white-out is a white-out and is
pretty funny; just aim for the sticks that mark the runs! Take care!

-William and Edward

Chile: An Update from New Team Members Will and Ed

p1000513.JPG

p1000546.JPG

We are making this trip to compete in the South American Freeskiing Championships at La Parva, the first stop on the Freeskiing World Tour. After hectic traveling, we got in to Chile separately, Will arriving Friday morning and Ed arriving Saturday the 29th. Will met his long-time friend Nick Hadsel-Mares in Santiago and we sprinted up to Farellones 5 minutes from La Parva and 15 minutes from Valle Nevado. El Colorado is the third and smallest resort, which is just above Farellones and was a having a 3 for 1 ticket promotion to celebrate its birthday. Nick and Will skied there with their driver from Santiago.
Sixteen bucks to ski after travelling for 36 hours was one of the happiest things. I (being William) took advantage of some small hits and El Colorado’s decent park to get back in the swing of things. It was the first day on the new Fortitude skis called the Yetis and those things are fun as anything I’ve ridden if not the best. Nick Whittemore hand presses them himself in Golden, Colorado and you can check out their website at www.fortitudeskis.com. Back at El Colorado, there was coincidentally a big air comp happening at La Parva. It was pretty cool to watch from the El Colorado lifts seeing tiny little skiers hitting the 75-foot booter with a helicopter filming. Lasse, an 18 year old from Norway won the skiing and BJ from Lake Tahoe won the snowboarding.
As in most places in Latin America, the nightlife can get pretty hectic, even at 2400 meters in Farellones. Pisco is liquor made from grapes and if you come to Chile you need to have a Pisco Sour, which is reminiscent of a margarita but definitely different. It works with coke as well. It also works as a good accessory when working on your two-step in la discoteca (see: Cliff Bennett)
Ed and I are staying in a little place attached to our friend Chopo Diaz’s house. Chopo is probably the best freeskier in Chile and competed with us on the Freeskiing World Tour. We were just joined by a friend of Chopo’s from Argentina, Nicolas who is also competing. We have nicknamed the place the cave, but it’s a fun location. It’s a short 7-minute walk to the Dominica Hostel where Nick H-M is staying. We have been having ham and cheese sandwiches and pasta for a few days now. Asada’s are pretty popular around here for eating BBQ and socializing.
As for the venue at La Parva, it is pretty awesome. It just opened at La Parva and was named McConkey’s, after our fallen hero Shane McConkey. Skier’s left side of the big couloir is the day one venue and right side is day two. They are going to be fast and fun. We’ve inspected a few times at La Parva. Hopefully we will get some snow, 10 cm is forecasted tomorrow and a big storm is supposed to head in during the comp, which can be a good and bad thing. Tomorrow we are going to check out Valle Nevado through El Colorado.
Enjoy the pictures! Check back in, we will probably have another post up Thursday night and then we’ll go daily through the comp.

Video

NOW on DVD and in Film Fests September 2009 - Tickets and Show times available at www.cbmajestic.net - The Majestic Theater: Crested Butte - $5 - 08/23/09 - Be There!

“WALK”
A Short Feature Film From Gorillabear Films and Two Plank Productions
(CRESTED BUTTE, CO) – Two Plank Productions is proud to announce a one night only screening of locally produced “WALK”, and short feature film. This is a unique opportunity to community members and visitors of the Gunnison and East River Valleys.

“WALK” premiered to the world on February 6th earlier this year at Warner Brothers Studios in Los Angeles, CA. In Association with Gorillabear Films and Gunnison Native filmmaker Gabriel Anderson, “WALK” is a “deep and unique” film.

For years writer/director Gabriel Anderson and local cinematographer/executive producer Corey Tibljas, have been interested in producing a film in their home communities. Finally in early 2008, the appropriate script idea came to Gabe’s mind. Eight months later a team of actors, producers, production assistants, and Gabe arrive in Gunnison from Los Angeles lead by Gabe’s younger brother David (co-star and executive producer).

In five extremely long days running from 3am to midnight, and the determined hard work of each person on the crew, the filming of “WALK” had been completed. “It was truly a non-stop shoot” states Tibljas, “from perfect weather, an outstanding turn out of local extras, and the devotion of everyone involved; we really lucked out with how tight the shooing schedule was”. When all is said and done, the crew returned to LA, beginning the editing and postproduction process. After an additional five months in a dark editing studio, “WALK” immerged in its finished state.

Film Synopsis:
A drifter’s vicious attack leaves a young musician named Milly (Sarah Potts) traumatized and isolated from the small Colorado town in which she lives. Mark (Alex Jaspersen), a friend who harbors a thinly-veiled crush on her, makes attempts to reach out to her and welcome her back to the community of friends they once shared.

Ultimately, Milly’s recovery is to be at her own pace, as she struggles to overcome her fears and return to the life she once led. “Walk” was filmed around the Gunnison Valley - using locations such as the Last Chance Bar, Crested Butte Mountain Resort, the Blue Iguana, and Buckaroo Beanery - by native filmmakers Gabriel Anderson and Corey Tibljas (TwoPlank Productions), and received its world premiere at Warner Bros. Studios in February 2009 with additional film festivals to follow.

“WALK” will screen one night only at The Majestic Theater in Crested Butte on Sunday, August 23rd at 8:30pm. Tickets are $5 and available at the box office or online at cbmajestic.net; bar and concessions will be available on screening night. Please join the director and producers for a fun night, film screening, and commentary from the crew.

“WALK” is 61 minutes running and is not rated; also contains adult language and themes.
